Weather and Temperature Installation

Asphalt Anchors can be installed in rain, heat, and cold within the limits of the selected adhesive. Installation temperature affects adhesive handling and curing; pavement temperature while the cured anchor is under load affects its pull capacity.

Rain and Wet Conditions

EPX3 and EPX5 can be used in wet conditions and standing water.

EPX2 must be installed in dry conditions. Although EPX2 is waterproof once it hardens, water can dilute the grout as it is poured into the hole. This can be caused by standing water, rain, or a high water table. If you cannot fully dry the hole, use EPX3 instead.

Cold Temperatures

EPX2 uses water in the mix. Below 50°F ambient temperature, use warm mixing water and dispense the mixture into the hole promptly. Do not install EPX2 below 40°F.

EPX3 can be installed down to 14°F when handled correctly. Preheat the cartridge to 70°F before use. Below 50°F, cold adhesive takes much longer to cure; if the adhesive itself is below freezing, curing will not begin. Once curing starts, the reaction generates heat and can sustain itself in most temperatures.

EPX5 follows the same cold-weather handling principles as EPX3 but can be installed only down to 24°F.

Hot Temperatures

Warm weather significantly speeds up the curing of all our adhesives. To preserve sufficient working time, keep the adhesive shaded and cool. For EPX2, place the mixing container in ice water. Keep EPX3 and EPX5 cartridges in a cooler or refrigerator until use.

Hot pavement can reduce anchor capacity

Heat affects the asphalt surrounding a cured anchor, independently of adhesive handling during installation. In our Sonoma testing on PG64-16 pavement, results were grouped into 10°F buckets and normalized to each anchor model’s average in the 70°F reference bucket. At 120°F, the highest bucket tested so far, all tested anchor models retained approximately 58–62% of their reference pull capacity.
